“A poem must be a debacle of the intellect,” wrote André Breton and Paul Éluard, in “Notes on Poetry” (“Notes sur la poésie,” La Révolution surréaliste, No. 12, Décembre 15, 1929).

How do we make such a poem when we are conditioned to, and presumably want to, render language that conveys something, however subtle or enigmatic, to the reader’s intellect?

Let’s shake up our intellectual and sensory perceptions, our ways of seeing and saying, by examining some well-made Surrealist-style poems to discern some strategies that stretch the realities in our poems without sacrificing the truthfulness and artfulness we desire.
